Mission: If English dictionaries define the word photo, perhaps photos can be used to define all English words. Using a collection of historic and modern prints and photographs, this site was created to share the ambiguity of words, as used to describe our history in images.

History: With origins dating back to the 1990s, I started creating a dictionary project based on the unabridged Webster’s dictionary. Called “Webster’s Online Dictionary – the Rosetta Edition” I build from those first definitions and added synonyms, word dates, translations, sound effects, images, poems, quotation and games. This archive is quickly growing faster than the original server can handle, so I have recently decided to place the photographic archives here. What I find intriguing, in addition to seeing images for the same word over time, it the usage of a single English word being used to describe an image across the various parts of speech. A single word might be used as a noun, verb, proper noun, and even an adjective. This site was primarily created for non-English speakers. Learners often have a better understanding of word ambiguity by using images. To further assist learning, the site will detect the language of the browser used by the visitor, and will then post translations for words of interest in that language.

For fun: I have created a number of sister sites that also contain materials that are part of my language learning sites. Please visit:
